بلدة المزار الجنوبي – شارع المسجد الكبير / مجمع مسجد جعفر بن أبي طالب

About this Place

In the heart of Karak, the Shrine of Ja'far ibn Abi Talib stands as a spiritual and historical landmark, where Islamic heritage meets a calm and deeply reflective atmosphere. It is not just a site—it is a journey into legacy and meaning.
It is not just a shrine… it is a living memory that stretches back to the era of the early companions of the Prophet. The site is attributed to Ja'far ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), the cousin of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and one of the most distinguished leaders of early Islam. His name remains strongly associated with courage and steadfastness during the famous Battle of Mu'tah, which took place on the land of present-day Jordan and marked a defining moment in Islamic history. In the heart of Al-Mazar Al-Janoubi town in Karak Governorate, the shrine of Ja'far ibn Abi Talib stands as both a spiritual and historical landmark, located within a modern mosque complex that preserves the sanctity of the site while reflecting its contemporary development. The shrine was rebuilt and renovated in 1997, and it also includes the tomb of the companion Zayd ibn Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him). Both shrines are connected through architectural arcades, symbolizing their shared legacy and historical connection. Archaeological inscriptions discovered at the site indicate continuous care and attention throughout history, particularly during the Ayyubid and Mamluk periods, highlighting the enduring sanctity of the location across centuries. The mosque consists of a large prayer hall of approximately 1,500 square meters, a smaller hall of about 100 square meters, and an open courtyard surrounded by arcades on all sides, creating a sense of peace and spaciousness for visitors. The complex also includes full facilities such as restrooms and a small clinic, ensuring a comfortable visitor experience. The site features three main entrances: The northern entrance leading directly to the shrine of Ja'far ibn Abi Talib An entrance connected to the residential area of Al-Mazar A western entrance linked to the adjacent commercial market The shrine itself is located outside the main prayer hall, allowing visitors to access it independently without entering the mosque, while a connecting arcade maintains a harmonious architectural and spiritual link between both spaces.
